Nepal’s Adventure Capital
POKHARA TRAVEL GUIDE
Pokhara sits at 820m on the shores of Phewa Lake, with the Annapurna Himalaya — including Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) at 6,993m — rising directly behind the city. It is the most beautiful city in Nepal and the starting point for the world’s best trekking.
The Essentials
Top 8 Things to Do in Pokhara
Sarangkot Sunrise
Pre-dawn drive to Sarangkot (1,592m) for the most photographed Annapurna panorama. Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre emerge in dawn alpenglow. 45-min drive; café at top for hot tea.
Phewa Lake Boat Ride
Rent a wooden rowboat (~NPR 400/hr) and row to Tal Barahi temple on the island. The lake reflects the Annapurna range on clear mornings. Sunset from the lake is one of Nepal's finest scenes.
World Peace Pagoda
White Japanese-built stupa on the ridge south of Phewa Lake (1,100m). 45-minute forest hike from the southern lakeshore. Panoramic Pokhara and Himalaya views. Best at sunset.
Tandem Paragliding
Pokhara is Asia's paragliding capital. Tandem flights launch from Sarangkot (1,600m), soar over Phewa Lake, land at Lakeside. 25–45 min, $60–90. Season Oct–May.
Davis Falls & Gupteshwor Cave
Davis Falls drops through a sinkhole into the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave system. Most impressive after monsoon (August). Both sites adjacent, 10 min from Lakeside.
International Mountain Museum
Best mountain museum in Nepal. Covers all 14 eight-thousanders, climbing history, ethnic communities, geology. Allow 2–3 hours. Essential context before a Himalayan trek.
Begnas Lake Day Trip
20km east, quieter twin lakes Begnas and Rupa. Rowing, fishing, birdwatching, excellent Annapurna views with far fewer tourists. 30-min drive.
Old Bazaar & Newari Quarter
Pokhara Old Bazaar (Bazar Tole), the original Tibetan trade route town. Traditional Newari architecture, tangka paintings, craft shops. Half a day.
