For Families & Kids
Family Trekking Nepal
Nepal is one of the world's finest destinations for family adventure travel. Children who complete Poon Hill — the most popular easy trek — come home changed. They have walked for 4 days through rhododendron forests, stayed in mountain teahouses with real Nepali families, and watched the sun rise over the Annapurna range from 3,210 metres. These are the memories that last. Our guides are experienced with family groups and adapt the pace, accommodation, and daily distance to suit every member of the team.

Why Families Choose Us
We have been leading family groups in the Himalayas since 1998. Here is what that experience means for your trip.
Ages 7+ for Poon Hill
Children as young as 7–8 regularly complete the Poon Hill trek with proper preparation and a flexible pace. Our guides carry additional snacks and make frequent rest stops.
Porter Carries the Load
Adults don't need to carry heavy packs — one porter between two people covers everyone's kit. Kids only carry their own day pack.
Teahouse Comfort
Family rooms are available at all teahouses on the Ghorepani route. Menus include pasta, eggs, rice, and momos that children enjoy. Boiled water is always available.
Flexible Day Lengths
We adjust the itinerary based on how the children are feeling. If 4 hours is enough on day two, we stop. No rigid group schedule to keep.
Safety Briefing
Full altitude awareness briefing for parents, a rest day built into longer itineraries, and emergency contacts pre-loaded on the guide's phone.
Cultural Experiences
Visits to local schools, butter tea with a Gurung family, and a cooking class in a Ghandruk home — moments children talk about for years.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age for trekking in Nepal?
Children as young as 6–7 can complete the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek (4 days, Easy) with a comfortable pace and porter support. Ages 10+ are suitable for the Mardi Himal Trek (Moderate). Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp are best saved for teenagers with solid fitness, given the distances and altitude involved. Day hikes from Pokhara have no minimum age — even toddlers can do the World Peace Pagoda hike with a carrier.
Is the Poon Hill trek safe for children?
Yes. The Poon Hill route is stone-paved almost the entire way, well-trafficked, and well-signposted. Teahouses are spaced 2–4 hours apart so there is always a warm stop nearby. The highest point (Poon Hill viewpoint) is 3,210m — altitude sickness is rare at this height. Our guides are briefed on children's symptoms and carry basic first aid. Emergency evacuation by helicopter is available if needed, though it is rarely required on this route.
What should children pack for a Nepal trek?
Layered clothing is key — teahouses are warm but the trail can be cold at dawn and dusk. Each child needs: waterproof jacket, fleece, thermal base layer, comfortable walking shoes (trail runners are fine), sun hat, sunglasses, small day pack, water bottle, and snacks (we supply basics). We provide a full detailed packing list on booking.
Can we mix trekking with cultural sightseeing?
Absolutely — this is our most popular family itinerary: 2 days Kathmandu heritage sites (Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath, Bhaktapur) → fly to Pokhara → 4-day Poon Hill trek → 2 nights Pokhara (lake, paragliding for older kids, boating) → home. Children get the cultural context before they reach the mountains, which makes the experience richer.
Do children pay less for Nepal trekking?
Children under 12 receive a 20–30% discount on our guided trek packages. National park entry permits also offer children's rates. We are transparent about the pricing breakdown on enquiry — contact us with the ages of your group and we will provide an accurate custom quote.
