Trip Highlights

Sarangkot (1,590 m) — Pokhara's premier sunrise viewpoint for the Annapurna range
Pre-dawn ascent: Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and Dhaulagiri lit amber at first light
Nagdanda ridge extension — a secondary viewpoint above Sarangkot with even fewer people
2–3 hour forest trail through Gurung villages above Pokhara's northern edge
Panoramic descent with Phewa Lake and the entire Pokhara valley spread below
Walk the Sarangkot–Nagdanda ridge above Pokhara with Annapurna and Machapuchare views from start to finish — a 4–5 hour hike beginning at sunrise.

Day-by-Day Itinerary(1 days)

Drive from Pokhara Lakeside (820m) to the Sarangkot viewpoint (1,592m) for dawn views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Trek west along the dramatic ridgeline through Kaskikot village, passing ancient forts and traditional Gurung and Brahmin settlements with sweeping views south over the Pokhara valley and north to the snow peaks. Continue to Naudanda (1,430m) and descend to Nagdanda (1,430m) — a total of 5–6 hours of ridge walking with minimal crowds. Drive back to Pokhara from Nagdanda.

The Sarangkot to Nagdanda Day Hike is the classic Pokhara ridge walk — a 4-hour traverse from Sarangkot (1,600 m), Pokhara's most famous sunrise viewpoint, to Nagdanda (1,430 m) along the forested ridge above the valley, with continuous Himalayan views westward to Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and the Annapurna range. The trail is well-maintained and clearly waymarked; daily distances are manageable for any fitness level.

Sarangkot at sunrise is one of Nepal's canonical photography moments — the Annapurna range lit pink and gold above Pokhara's lake valley, with Machapuchare's twin summits the dominant foreground element. The ridge walk to Nagdanda extends the experience beyond the dawn crowds at the viewpoint and delivers the mountains in the morning light across three hours of walking. Private jeep pickup from Nagdanda returns to Pokhara for lunch.

Best time: Year-round; sunrise departure recommended. Duration: 4–5 hours walking. Transport: Both ways included.

We almost booked a paragliding flight instead. I'm glad we didn't. The ridge walk took four hours and our guide Sunil stopped at every viewpoint without us having to ask. Pokhara and Phewa Lake from above, the full Annapurna range to the north — my husband said it was the best morning of our two-week Nepal trip. He was right.
