The quick answer — 2026

The popular teahouse treks cost about NPR 5,000–6,000 (≈ US$40–45) per person in permits. Annapurna treks need ACAP (NPR 3,000) + TIMS (NPR 2,000). Everest Base Camp needs the Sagarmatha National Park permit (NPR 3,000) + the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit (NPR 3,000) — no TIMS. Restricted areas cost much more: Manaslu ≈ US$250, Upper Mustang ≈ US$525.

Since April 2023 a licensed guide is required for national-park trekking, and permits are issued through registered agencies. Fees are set in Nepali rupees; USD figures are approximate at ~NPR 133/US$. Reviewed June 2026 — we confirm live rates before you trek.

New rule since 2023: a licensed guide is mandatory

From April 2023, Nepal requires trekkers in national parks and conservation areas to trek with a government-licensed guide — fully independent solo trekking is no longer permitted on these routes, and permits are issued through registered agencies. Restricted areas (Manaslu, Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, Tsum, Nar Phu) have always required a guide and a minimum of two trekkers. Every Travel Himalaya Nepal package includes an NMA-certified guide.

Nepal permit FAQs (2026)

How much do Nepal trekking permits cost in 2026?+
It depends on the region. The teahouse classics cost about NPR 5,000–6,000 (≈ US$40–45) per person: Annapurna treks need ACAP (NPR 3,000) + TIMS (NPR 2,000); Everest Base Camp needs the Sagarmatha National Park permit (NPR 3,000) + Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit (NPR 3,000). Restricted areas cost far more — Manaslu ~US$250 and Upper Mustang ~US$525 in permit fees.
Do I need a TIMS card for Everest Base Camp?+
No. TIMS is not required in the Everest/Khumbu region — it was replaced in 2018 by the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. For EBC you need the Sagarmatha National Park permit + the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu permit. TIMS is still required for Annapurna, Langtang and most other regions.
Do I need a licensed guide to trek in Nepal in 2026?+
For most national-park and conservation-area treks, yes. Since April 2023 Nepal requires trekkers to be accompanied by a licensed guide (solo, fully independent trekking is restricted in these areas), and permits are issued through registered agencies. Restricted areas (Manaslu, Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, Tsum, Nar Phu) have always required a guide and a minimum of two trekkers.
Do I need to arrange permits myself?+
No — when you book with Travel Himalaya Nepal, every permit your trek requires is arranged for you and included in the package price, along with your licensed guide. Nothing to queue for.
Are permit costs the same all year?+
National-park and conservation-area fees (Sagarmatha, ACAP, Langtang, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu) are fixed year-round. The Manaslu Restricted Area Permit is higher in peak season (September–November: US$100 for the first 7 days vs US$75 in the off-season).
In what currency are permits paid — NPR or USD?+
National-park and conservation-area permits (Sagarmatha, ACAP, Langtang, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu, MCAP) and TIMS are set and paid in Nepali rupees. The restricted-area permits for Manaslu and Upper Mustang are officially priced in US dollars. Carry Nepali rupees in cash for fees collected on the trail.
What happens if I'm caught without a permit?+
Checkpoints on every major route verify permits. Without them you will be turned back or fined. Because we arrange everything before your trek begins, our clients are never stopped.
