Day-by-Day Itinerary(10 days)
Altitude Profile
Peak: 5,164 m · Day 7The EBC Trek with Helicopter Return is the smartest 10-day Khumbu itinerary available: walk in to Everest Base Camp on the classic trail (absorbing the full culture, landscape, and altitude experience), then fly back from Gorak Shep by private helicopter — arriving in Kathmandu on the same afternoon that you would otherwise be beginning a 4-day descent. For trekkers with hard outbound flight deadlines, this combination saves four days without sacrificing a single step of the classic trek.
The outbound trek follows the Tenzing-Hillary route in full: all four EBC approach stages (Lukla to Namche, Namche rest day, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche) are completed at the standard acclimatisation pace. The Base Camp visit and Kala Patthar sunrise are unchanged. The only modification is the descent — instead of 4 days of retracing your steps downhill, a 45-minute helicopter flight from Gorak Shep (5,140 m) delivers you back to Lukla, then Kathmandu.
The helicopter flight itself is spectacular: crossing the Khumbu valley at altitude, flying above the icefalls and moraines that took 8 days to walk, watching the landscape of the Khumbu shrink below. It is, in its own right, one of the great Himalayan experiences.
The Practical Case for the Helicopter Return
The descent from EBC to Lukla takes 4 days. For most trekkers, those days are the least interesting of the trek — retracing familiar ground with tired legs and the summit objective already achieved. Replacing them with a helicopter flight costs approximately USD 250–350 more than a standard EBC itinerary (the helicopter share is split among the group, usually 5–6 people per aircraft). For most people, the mathematics of time vs. cost make it straightforward. The helicopter price is included in this package price.
Best seasons: October–November and March–May. Helicopter weather: Gorak Shep–Lukla flight subject to morning weather; afternoon backup available most days. Max altitude: Kala Patthar 5,545 m.

Best Time to Go
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Prime season. October is perfect — clear skies, stable weather, 4–6 week dry window. November gets cold at altitude but still excellent. EBC trail at its busiest.
Spring (Mar–May)
Climbing season — expeditions on Everest. Good trekking weather. Rhododendrons in Namche area. Pre-monsoon cloud builds in afternoon from May. Slightly warmer than autumn.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Very cold. Khumbu trails remain open but temperatures extreme at EBC (-20°C+). Experienced cold-weather trekkers only. Fewer crowds. Lodges may be closed above Namche.
Monsoon (Jun–Aug)
Not recommended. Trails wet and unstable. Cloud cover obscures mountain views. Risk of landslides on lower sections.
