Why Mustang
Nepal's Tibetan Desert Kingdom
Mustang is the former Kingdom of Lo — an independent Tibetan Buddhist principality that remained closed to outsiders until 1992. Even today it remains a restricted area requiring a special permit and a licensed guide. The result is a landscape unlike anywhere else in Nepal: wind-sculpted red and ochre cliffs, ancient cave monasteries carved into cliff faces, yak caravans on trade routes that predate Nepal itself, and the medieval walled city of Lo Manthang still inhabited by the descendants of its original founders.
Mustang's defining geographic feature is its rain shadow. The Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs block the monsoon clouds, leaving Upper Mustang dry and accessible even during July and August when the rest of Nepal is under heavy rain. This makes Mustang one of the only trekking regions in Nepal that is genuinely better visited during the monsoon months.
The Tiji Festival — held in Lo Manthang over three days in late April or May — is the most visually dramatic festival in Nepal. Monks in elaborate costumes perform ritual dances to drive out evil spirits, against the backdrop of the white palace walls and Himalayan peaks. Limited trekker access during the festival means it retains an authenticity that is rare.

When to Go
Month-by-Month Conditions
Mustang's rain shadow means it is open during the monsoon (Jun–Aug) — a major advantage over every other Nepal trekking region. Peak seasons are May (Tiji Festival) and September–October.

Logistics
Getting to Jomsom
Pokhara → Jomsom by Air
The standard approach. Jomsom Airport (2,720m) has daily morning flights from Pokhara. Must fly before 9am — afternoon winds make the Jomsom runway impassable. All our packages include this transfer.
Pokhara → Kagbeni by Jeep
Adventurous road journey via the Kali Gandaki gorge. The road has dramatically improved — our drivers navigate the route confidently. Good option when flights are cancelled due to weather.
Return: Jomsom → Pokhara
Return flight from Jomsom. Some trekkers choose to continue south on the Annapurna Circuit from Jomsom/Marpha, adding 4–5 days to exit via Nayapul and Pokhara.
