The short version
Gokyo's six glacial lakes are among Nepal's most spectacular sights. Combined with Gokyo Ri (5,357m) views of four 8,000m peaks, this is the most underrated trek in the Khumbu.
- Gokyo sits at 4,790m beside six turquoise glacial lakes drained by the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's largest.
- Gokyo Ri (5,357m) shows four 8,000m peaks in one frame — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu — a view many prefer to Kala Patthar.
- A pure Gokyo trek is 11–12 days for $1,500–2,200 guided; adding the Cho La Pass and EBC makes it 18–20 days for $2,200–3,000.
- A licensed guide is mandatory on all Sagarmatha National Park trails since April 2023; three permits are required.
Why Gokyo Lakes?
Most EBC trekkers walk straight past the Gokyo valley junction without knowing what lies 2 days to the west. Gokyo sits at 4,790m beside six glacial lakes of an extraordinary turquoise-blue colour — drained by the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's largest. The view from Gokyo Ri (5,357m) gives you four 8,000m peaks in a single frame: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.
The Six Gokyo Lakes
The main lake, with Gokyo village on its shore — the classic turquoise photograph.
Cho Oyu mirrored in still water at first light.
Wilder and far fewer visitors — a quieter fourth lake worth the walk.
A long moraine walk to stunning isolation above the glacier.
- Longponga (4,690m) — first lake on the approach trail
- Taujung (4,750m) — Cho Oyu reflection in still water
- Dudh Pokhari (4,750m) — main lake, Gokyo village on its shore; the classic turquoise photograph
- Thonak (4,840m) — wilder, fewer visitors
- Ngozumba (4,990m) — long moraine walk, stunning isolation
- Gyazumpa (5,000m) — rarely visited, serious mountaineers only
Gokyo Ri (5,357m)
The 2-hour climb from Gokyo village starts before 5am for sunrise views. At the summit: Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m) fill the horizon — four of the world's six highest peaks. Many experienced trekkers prefer this vista to Kala Patthar.
Route Options
Option 1 — Pure Gokyo (12 days): Fly to Lukla, walk via Namche and Dole to Gokyo, summit Gokyo Ri, return. Option 2 — Gokyo + Cho La Pass + EBC (18–20 days): The complete Khumbu experience crossing the 5,420m Cho La Pass. Option 3 — Three Passes (21+ days): For highly experienced trekkers.
Acclimatisation
Namche (3,440m): 2 nights. Dole (4,200m): 1 night. Machhermo (4,470m): 1 night. Gokyo (4,790m): 2 nights. Do not rush this schedule.
The acclimatisation plan — two nights at Namche, one each at Dole and Machhermo, two at Gokyo — exists to keep you safe at altitude. Skipping nights is the most common cause of AMS on this route.
Permits
- Sagarmatha National Park: USD $30
- TIMS: NPR 2,000 (~$15)
- Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Municipality: NPR 2,000 (~$15)
Cost
$1,500–2,200 for a guided 12-day trek including guide, permits, flights, and accommodation. The combined Gokyo + EBC route is $2,200–3,000 for 18–20 days.
Best Time to Visit Gokyo Lakes
October–November is peak season: clear skies after monsoon, stable snow above 5,000m, and sunrise colours that make the turquoise lakes glow gold. April–May is equally good with fewer trekkers. December–February is possible but extreme cold (-15°C nights at Gokyo) and the Cho La Pass closes. March offers solitude but variable weather.
Accommodation at Gokyo Village
Around 15 tea houses line the shore of Lake Dudh Pokhari. Expect twin rooms (NPR 300–600), shared Western toilets at better lodges, charging facilities (NPR 200–300/device), and wood-stove dining rooms. Wifi via Everest Link satellite is available at most lodges (NPR 500–700/day). Book ahead for October.
Difficulty Level
Moderate-to-challenging. No technical equipment required. The main physical tests: the 600m Namche Hill on day 2, the sustained high-altitude approach through Dole and Machhermo, and the 600m summit push to Gokyo Ri. Budget 5–7 hours of hiking on the longer days. Fitness equivalent to hiking 8–10 hours with a day pack is sufficient.

Gokyo vs Everest Base Camp
| Dimension | Gokyo Lakes | Everest Base Camp |
|---|---|---|
| Headline draw | Turquoise glacial lakes + Gokyo Ri panorama | Standing at the foot of Everest |
| 8,000m peaks in one view | 4 (from Gokyo Ri) | 2 (from Kala Patthar) |
| Top viewpoint | Gokyo Ri (5,357m) | Kala Patthar (5,545m) |
| Crowds | Quieter, more solitude | Busy in peak season |
| Duration (pure route) | 11–12 days | 12–14 days |
| Best for | Scenery and quiet | Cultural prestige |
EBC carries the prestige of standing at the foot of the world's highest mountain. Gokyo wins on scenery — four 8,000m peaks visible from Gokyo Ri vs two from Kala Patthar, plus the extraordinary glacial lakes that EBC trekkers completely miss. If you can only do one: EBC for the cultural weight. Gokyo for the views and solitude.
Cannot decide? The classic combination crosses the Cho La Pass (5,420m) to link the Gokyo and Khumbu valleys, giving you the lakes, Gokyo Ri and Everest Base Camp in one 18–20 day trip. Crampons (provided) are needed for the pass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a guide for the Gokyo trek?
Since April 2023, Nepal requires a licensed trekking guide on all Sagarmatha National Park trails including the Gokyo valley. Solo unguided trekking is no longer permitted. Our packages include a certified NMA guide throughout.
Can I combine Gokyo with Everest Base Camp?
Yes — the classic combination crosses the Cho La Pass (5,420m) between the Gokyo and Khumbu valleys. It adds 6–8 days to a pure Gokyo itinerary. Crampons required for the pass (provided). Best in October–November or April–May.
Is Gokyo harder than Everest Base Camp?
Gokyo village (4,790m) sits 100m higher than EBC's night-stop at Gorak Shep (5,140m is the camp, Gorak Shep lodge is 5,100m), but the Gokyo route has gentler daily elevation gain than the EBC approach. Gokyo Ri (5,357m) is harder than Kala Patthar (5,545m) is higher than Gokyo Ri. Overall difficulty is very similar.
What permits do I need for Gokyo?
You need three permits: Sagarmatha National Park Entry ($30 USD), TIMS card (NPR 2,000 for agency trekkers), and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Municipality fee (NPR 2,000). All are included in our guided packages — no queuing at government offices.
Why choose Gokyo over Everest Base Camp?
Gokyo Ri shows four 8,000m peaks in a single frame versus two from Kala Patthar, plus six turquoise glacial lakes that EBC trekkers never see — and far fewer crowds. EBC still wins on the cultural prestige of reaching the foot of Everest.
How fit do I need to be for the Gokyo trek?
It is moderate-to-challenging with no technical equipment required. Expect 5–7 hours of hiking on longer days; fitness equivalent to comfortably hiking 8–10 hours with a daypack is sufficient. The main tests are the 600m Namche Hill and the 600m Gokyo Ri summit push.
